The England team has arrived home as heroes after a World Cup run that captivated football fans across the country.

The players and coaches flew into Birmingham Airport on Sunday afternoon following a run at the tournament that far exceeded most people's expectations.

The Three Lions reached the semi-final before a heart-breaking extra time defeat at the hands of Croatia.

A squad photo taken outside the plane they touched down on was posted on the official England account.

“Thanks for your amazing support during the #WorldCup – we’re looking forward to showing our appreciation when we see you at @wembleystadium and @LCFC in September,” the post read.

Fans were denied the chance to give Gareth Southgate's squad a hero’s welcome when they arrive back at Birmingham Airport from the World Cup.

But the airport has asked fans to stay away from the site and said there would not be a viewing area to greet the team.

A statement on Birmingham Airport’s official Twitter account read: “Please be aware that there be no public viewing area to see the England football team arrive home so we strongly advise the public not to come to Birmingham Airport as you will not see the team.”

After receiving a deluge of tweets from angry fans, the airport later added: “We haven’t made the decision to not arrange a homecoming. We’re handling the flight as the FA asked and the area of the airport doesn’t lend itself to a viewing area.

"We understand you want to welcome the team but you’ll not be able to see them. We ask you not to come to the site."

When England’s 1990 semi-final squad returned home, fans came to cheer the squad at Luton Airport and then threw a ceremony in the town.
