Bake Off's Prue Leith met husband on someone else's date
Leith and John Playfair have been together for 12 years and married for eight
What did you miss?
Prue Leith has revealed that she and her husband John Playfair actually met on someone else's double date.
The Bake Off judge has been with fashion designer Playfair, who is her second husband, for 12 years and they tied the knot in 2016. And she's now shared how their meeting came about by accident when she ended up being the "gooseberry" at a friend's romantic evening.
The star opened up on ITV's Loose Women, as the hosts quizzed her about how she and Playfair got together.
What, how, and why?
Playfair joked that they met on "geriatric Tinder", but, laughing, Leith said: "Rather boringly we met in a friend’s house. I was coming back from Yorkshire with a girlfriend and she was terribly anxious to get to her dinner party.
"I said, 'Well can't you drop me first?' and she said, 'No no no! I have to be there.' So we went to her house first and she said, 'Come in for a drink.' When I got in there, there were these two guys standing there and these two sisters, my friend and her sister. In the corner was this little table with candles and champagne – it was all such an obvious set-up!"
She went on: "I was desperate to get out of there and I hardly listened to a word John was saying because I kept thinking, 'I am a gooseberry here.' And then he turned up the next day at my house!"
Loose Women star Ruth Langsford chimed in: "So Prue shot off, thinking, 'I'm interrupting a double date here, I need to get out'."
"Exactly," said Leith. "I had to wait 10 hours to stalk her,” Playfair joked, saying he had felt an “instant attraction” to the TV star.
What else happened on Loose Women?
The pair are now set to work together as Playfair will be in Leith's show Prue Leith’s Cotswold Kitchen. Asked how he came to sign up, Playfair quipped: "I always obey!"
Leith explained: "I had always wanted a show of my own. This is not quite my own because he muscled in and he’s really good at it and now I’m really scared that what happens next time around is that it will be John's Cotswold Kitchen… but he’s really good at it."
However, it seems any cooking might have to be left to Leith, as it seems Playfair isn't a match for her in the kitchen. "He can’t boil an egg even," she laughed.
