Hungary star Barnabas Varga was knocked "out cold" after the Ferencvaros man was involved in a sickening collision during the match with Scotland.

The striker was caught by Angus Gunn as he went for a ball into the box with BBC co-commentator Neil McCann saying he was knocked out. The stricken striker lay on the turf as the medical team raced onto the pitch with a stretcher coming on to take him off after a cover had been put round him to shield him. Vargas has since been taken to hospital.

The Hungarian players were frantic with worry and there was real concern as he received treatment for six minutes. The Stuttgart Arena was stunned into silence after the incident. The BBC commentator said: "These are scenes you never want to see in any football stadium. We just hope he's going to be okay. There's still over 20 minutes to play. The Hungarian captain Dominik Szoboszlai is on tears out in the field there. And when you're so close to something like that it's fairly traumatic. Really difficult scenes here in Stuttgart."

VAR checked the incident for a potential penalty but former Scotland striker Pat Nevin said: "We have seen it before if a keeper comes out and he doesn't get the ball but takes a player it is a foul. I actually think Angus Gunn got some of the ball there."

The Hungarian FA later relayed good news. They revealed the player is in a stable condition and is conscious. Gunn said: "Hopefully the guy's all right. I don't really remember that one."
