New Basildon Vue cinema to open later this summer with 50 new jobs

A new multimillion cinema in Basildon Town Centre is set to open “later this summer” with the new business creating 50 jobs. The Vue cinema is preparing to open in East Square in the town as part of the new development which also includes a number of eateries such as Nando’s, Orleto Lounge and Kaspa’s dessert parlour.

The new cinema was due to be opened by Empire Cinemas but the firm went into administration in July 2023. Vue says each of the ten screens will feature stadium-tiered, luxury leather seating alongside Vue’s recliner seats, high definition 4K screens, laser digital projection systems and Dolby Atmos multi-dimensional sound in selected screens.

A spokesman for Vue said: “Ahead of the launch of its new Basildon, East Square venue later this summer, Vue has begun the recruitment process to appoint a team of nearly 50 people to welcome its customers this summer, with an overwhelming response from people in the area.”

The development of East Square was carried out by Basildon Council in 2017, and cost £26.7million, under the then Tory administration. Kevin Blake, deputy leader of the Basildon Conservative Party, said: “Obviously it’s good news for the town, we said all along we would do it and it is going to happen.

“It’s good to see new jobs for the town, but it’s not just about the jobs at the cinema, these workers will spend their money in the town, so it’s a boost for the whole economy in a number of ways. I think it will be popular and busy, it’s all going to be state of the art technology and Vue’s prices are very reasonable and good value.

“We were always confident this would be a good leisure offering for people in the borough and those from outside Basildon too – if we’ve got one of the best cinemas in the area why wouldn’t people visit Basildon for it.”

As work continues, the site was visited by Vue’s UK&I Territory General Manager, Toby Bradon. Mr Bradon said: “It was wonderful to have the opportunity to see our new venue come to life. We’re excited to bring Vue to Basildon in time for families to enjoy films during the summer holidays.

“To help us offer the big screen experience we are renowned for, we are seeking to recruit a team who are passionate about the films made for the big screen and creating an exceptional experience for customers. The vacancies are a fantastic opportunity for avid film fans in particular and those who excel in a customer service role.”
