It's been confirmed that Ben Affleck is dropping his directing duties on standalone film The Batman, but is maintaining his cowl-and-cape-wearing duties to play the Dark Knight.

However, it's not all bad news. Benbo's first version of the script, which he put together with Geoff Johns, has just be given a rewrite by Chris Terrio, reports Deadline.

That's the Oscar-winning writer of Argo, which Affleck DID direct back in 2012. So it sounds like the film is in very good hands, after a shaky start to the DC movie universe that includes Batman vs Superman and Suicide Squad, both released in 2016.

Speaking about his decision to step down from directing, Affleck, who will next play The Bat in November's Justice League, said: "There are certain characters who hold a special place in the hearts of millions.

"Performing this role demands focus, passion and the very best performance I can give. It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require.

"Together with the studio, I have decided to find a partner in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive film. I am still in this, and we are making it, but we are currently looking for a director.

"I remain extremely committed to this project, and look forward to bringing this to life for fans around the world."

As for potential directors, rumours suggest Captain Fantastic's Matt Ross, and Matt Reeves, the director on monkey threequel War of the Planet of the Apes, are being considered.

Forbes added Gavin O'Connor (Warrior), Denis Villeneuve (Arrival, Blade Runner 2049) and George Miller (Mad Max: Fury Road) to the unconfirmed shortlist.

Joe Manganiello, who you'll know from taking off his shirt in True Blood and, erm, taking off his shirt in the Magic Mike movies, has been cast as deadly ninja assassin Deathstroke for the caped crusader's solo outing.

There's an unnamed DC film scheduled for around October 2018 - and you don't have to be the world's greatest detective to deduce that this is likely to be the slot of The Batman.

Although just like the film's director and the public perception of whether Ben Affleck can actually play a superhero - this could still change.
