Countryfile's Adam Henson has become a staple of our screens as he shines a light on farming issues for the BBC flagship show.

Off-screen, the TV personality has had his fair share of personal challenges. He secretly wed during the pandemic for a devastating reason - his wife Charlie, whom he shares two children with, was diagnosed with stage one pancreatic cancer after becoming ill over Christmas 2020.

The prognosis was unfavourable, with doctors revealing she had a "very low" survival rate and would require major surgery to combat the disease, reports the Express.

Reflecting on her diagnosis, Charlie revealed in an interview with the Telegraph: "I was told the scan showed a 4.5cm growth on my pancreas, located in a difficult position and it was very serious."

She went onto add: "I knew that this type of cancer had a very low survival rate just five per cent."

In a heartfelt interview, Adam shared: "Yes, we were told, it is cancer, but there is a possibility it could be a rare, slow-growing type a neuroendocrine tumour, which in some cases may be treatable."

The couple were shaken by the news that only two percent of such cases are neuroendocrine, and even then, treatment options would be challenging due to the tumour's size and location. Adam continued: "There was a distinct possibility all they could do was offer palliative care."

When asked about his marriage, it was revealed that the diagnosis prompted Charlie to express her desire for them to wed. She explained to the Mirror: "After 28 years together you do get a bit complacent, but getting married was suddenly really important - we didn't know how long we had left, and I wanted Adam to know I was committed to him."

The couple disclosed that Charlie's mother and sisters wasted no time in securing the earliest possible wedding date. The ceremony took place on 9 September 2021 at Stroud Register Office, with Charlie undergoing surgery the following day the Whipple procedure, involving the removal of parts of the pancreas, gall bladder, and duodenum.

Reflecting on their special day, Adam recounted: "There were a lot of tears and a lot of emotion in the room. Charlie wore an ivory dress and looked stunning when she walked in with her mum."

Adam also recalled the emotional intensity of the vows, saying: "We were both crying through the vows, and the next very emotional time for me was giving a speech at the reception."

"I talked about all the lovely things we'd done, how strong we were together, how we were going through some very, very difficult times - but we would come out the other side."

After a successful procedure and three days in intensive care, Charlie started her recovery and returned to work late last year.
