BBC presenter Simon McCoy delivers fantastically lacklustre report on the royal baby due date

BBC News presenter Simon McCoy has amused viewers by delivering a fantastically lacklustre report on the due date of the royal baby.

Mr McCoy, who is known for being underwhelmed by royal baby news, announced the due date for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's third child in a characteristically deadpan manner.

Kensington Palace confirmed on Tuesday that William and Kate are expecting their third child in April. Her pregnancy was announced in September.

When delivering a report about the due date, Mr McCoy appeared to find it hard to summon any enthusiasm.

In 2013, Mr McCoy expressed his lack of enthusiasm as he reported on the lead up to Prince George's birth outside the Lindo Wing at St Mary's hospital in Paddington.

Mr McCoy delivered a report on the royal baby due date on the BBC's News live channel on Tuesday afternoon.

In scenes that some described as "peak Simon McCoy", he said: “Now, bearing in mind that they announced that she was pregnant back in September and it was thought that she was around two or three months pregnant, I’m not sure how much news this really is.”

He added in an impassive manner: “But anyway it’s April so clear your diaries, get the time booked off because that’s what I’m doing.”

Viewers took to social media to express their amusement at the newsreader's approach.

One said: “If there was one person I wanted to deliver this news, it was absolutely Simon McCoy.”

Another Twitter user said the announcement gave them a "belly laugh".

Simon McCoy himself tweeted: “Their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted to confirm they are expecting a baby in April", adding the hashtag “#News”.

It comes after the presenter also failed to hide his disdain when reporting on the World Dog Surfing Championships in August.

Having reeled off a report alongside images of surfing dogs in a noticeably flat tone, the camera cut back to Mr McCoy in the studio as he sarcastically said: “That’s a shame; we’ve run out of pictures.”
