Beach tracks plan for two of North Wales' finest sandy spots

Two of the finest beaches in North Wales could gets tracks installed to help improve access. Colwyn Bay and Rhos-on-Sea have some of best beaches in the entire region after millions of pounds of investment in sea defences and new sand.

But access is difficult for some and the Bay of Colwyn Town Council wants to address this. They have proposed installing two beach mats at the promenade in Rhos-on-Sea and also next to Porth Eirias. The mats would be kept down with spikes and staples.

These would be in place during the peak spring and summer seasons. But they would be removable so they could be relocated during winter and if storms are forecast.

An application is now with Conwy council.

A statement said: "The application relates to the temporary installation (during spring and summer annually) of two lengths of permeable beach matting, each measuring 25m long and 1.5m wide, to improve access to the permanent dry beaches at Colwyn Bay and Rhos-on-Sea.

"As the mats are designed to be quickly and easily removed/relocated for over-winter storage or during periods of bad weather their exact siting can take into consideration any changing environmental factors."

It added: "The need for improved access on to the beach has been identified through the community engagement conducted for the Colwyn Place Plan and through comments by residents and visitors on social media. The existing ramp from the promenade on to the beach to the west of Porth Eirias is covered in sand and not suitable for any form of wheeled access to the beach.

"There is also no provision for any wheeled access onto the beach along the new Rhos-on-Sea section of promenade, other than a very small section of beach which can be accessed at the foot of the short slipway."

The proposals will now be considered by planners.
