The film centers on Lydia Deetz (Ryder) and her family returning home after a tragedy and then later dealing with the consequences when her daughter, Astrid (Ortega), opens the portal to the afterlife. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’s teaser trailer debuted in March and featured Keaton declaring to an astonished Ryder, “The juice is loose.”

Burton directs the sequel from a script by Wednesday showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, with Seth Grahame-Smith credited for his work on the film’s story. Burton, Dede Gardner, Tommy Harper, Jeremy Kleiner and Marc Toberoff serve as producers.

The 1988 movie collected $73 million at the box office ($195 million today) and won the Oscar for best makeup. It also spawned a TV animated series and a Broadway musical.

While she is new to the franchise, Ortega previously worked with Burton, who served as director and producer on her Netflix series Wednesday.

Burton and the cast debuted Beetlejuice Beetlejuice footage last month at CinemaCon, where the director told the crowd about his motivation for doing the sequel: “I got interested in what happened to the Deetz family.”

Additionally, Keaton admitted to the event’s audience that he had already watched the new movie twice. He added, “I have to tell you this, though. It’s really fucking good.”
