The Best Social Media Reactions to 'The Last Dance' Episodes Nine and Ten
Before The Last Dance, did we know it was possible to incorporate cliffhangers into a sports documentary, where about 90 percent of its viewers know what happens at the end? Turns out the move is to get Michael Jordan talking about the cost of winning—tears will start to flow—and build up to it with a highlights montage set to José González’s “Teardrop” cover. (A supercut of Jerry Krause moments set to “Heartbeats” somewhere in Episodes Nine and Ten would’ve really tugged on the heartstrings.)
With how Episode Eight ended, the stakes heading into Sunday night’s final two episodes of The Last Dance feel almost (with sports fans probably debating whether or not they should be getting into Bundesliga right about now) as high as they did going into Game 6 of the 1998 NBA Finals. If there was any doubt at all, the director of The Last Dance, Jason Hehir, didn’t disappoint in the series’ conclusion, once again managing to fit years worth of drama into a roughly 90-minute block of time. Tonight? It’s ring number six, the Flu Game, Michael Jordan’s second retirement, the last moments of the MJ-era Chicago Bulls dynasty, and much, much more.
After five weeks of watching one of the highest-profile documentary series events we’ve ever seen—heightened, of course, by the world losing sports almost entirely just before The Last Dance premiered—here’s how fans reacted to the epic conclusion of Michael Jordan’s story.
