PRIDE OF BRITAIN: WINDRUSH SPECIAL
Thursday 19th October 2023 on ITV1

Pictured: Alford Gardner, who stepped off the Empire Windrush - a ship which brought about 500 migrants to the UK from the Caribbean - had a special visit from HRH Prince William of Wales at his home in Leeds, West Yorkshire as part of Pride of Britain.

This brand new documentary in partnership with Pride of Britain tells the story of the Windrush generation - 75 years after the ship arrived at Tilbury Docks.

Members of the generation - which received a special Pride of Britain Award this year - share their stories with figures including Sir Trevor McDonald, Alesha Dixon, Mel B, Judi Love and HRH The Prince of Wales as they provide a vivid insight into the experiences of the community of more than 500,000 who arrived in Britain between 1948 and 1971.

Those featured in the programme include Alford Gardner, who set up Britain's first Afro-Caribbean cricket club in Leeds, Guy Bailey, whose rejection for a job on the buses in Bristol paved the way for a change in the law, and Vernesta Cyril, who cared for thousands of women and babies as a midwife in Wales for more than 40 years.

Their stories are told alongside those of Lloyd Coxsone, a pioneer of the sound system movement who helped shape UK pop culture, and Joseph Mowlah-Baksh, who is one of more than 60,000 people affected by the Windrush scandal.
