A massive Boeing 747 cargo plane has found itself stranded after mistakenly landing at the wrong airport, unable to turn round.

The modified plane accidentally landed at Jabara Airport, a small airport ten miles away from its correct destination of McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita, Kansas.

It is unclear whether the plane landed at the wrong airport on purpose or by mistake, but Jabara's airfield is at least 1,000ft too short for the huge plane to take off.

Eyewitness reports in Kansas claim the cargo plane is being towed into position by a tug.

The Boeing 747 will attempt to take off again, despite the short length of the runway, at noon local time (17.00 GMT).

Audio captured by LiveATC.net suggests the Dreamlifter pilots informed McConnell's tower controller after the plane touched down, and did not realize where they were.

One pilot is then said to have told McConnell: 'Ahh, yes sir, we just landed at the other airport.'

No one was hurt and no property was damaged, according to the City Wichita. The Federal Aviation Administration said it is investigating.

In a statement, Boeing confirmed the plane landed safely, but offered no further details.'A Dreamlifter bound for McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita safely landed this evening at nearby Col. James Jabara Airport instead,' Boeing said.

'We are working to determine next steps and will have additional information in the morning.'

Meanwhile, the Dreamlifter, a giant, modified 747 that can hold 65,000 cubic feet of cargo, is sitting at Jabara, which has no control tower and normally doesn't handle jumbo jets, according to CNN.
