Bones came to an emotional end in the US on Tuesday night, after 12 seasons.

The last ever episode, titled 'The End in the End', saw – spoilers! – Dr Temperance 'Bones' Brennan suffer minor brain damage that affected her intelligence and the ability to piece together the show's final case, as a result of the bombs.

The other characters, however, chipped in and got to the bottom of where Kovac was, allowing Brennan and Seeley Booth to confront him, ending in the villain's death.

But Brennan feared that she had lost what made her who she was.

Booth reassured her: "I don't care if you know about the bones. Or if you know how to solve crimes.

"All I know is that I want to spend the rest of my life with you. This is you, Temperance Brennan. You're my partner. Don't forget that."

After a touching shout-out to Dr Lance Sweets, the last moments saw Brennan telling Booth that she wanted to keep the broken clock in the lab – which stopped when the explosions there happened.

Booth was confused.

"Why would you want to be reminded of the moment everything almost ended?" he asked.

Her answer was simple. "Because it didn't."

Fans on Twitter almost universally loved the finale:

The ending was left open for a possible continuation – but show creator Hart Hanson doesn't expect anything to happen any time soon.

"We just don't know," he told Deadline. "I have no idea, but I'm going to say right now it would seem more likely that one long-form thing would happen.

"But, again, you just don't know, and by the way, there may be no appetite for it."
