Boy, four, dies after being crushed by iron gate while on holiday

A four-year-old boy has died after being crushed by an iron gate while on holiday in Italy.

Angelo Quirino, from Crumpsall, Manchester, was visiting family near Rome when he was killed on Saturday afternoon.

He suffered injuries to his head and collarbone when the 200kg sliding iron gate fell on top of him while he played football with his older brother, the Manchester Evening News reported.

His family had rented the property in the coastal area of Anzio (pictured above), about 40 miles south of Rome, and were three days into a visit with Italian relatives.

The boy’s uncle and neighbours rushed to his aid when they heard screams but he was found unconscious, according to reports.

Angelo, who was reportedly on holiday with his mother Roberta, brother and little sister, was due to start school in north Manchester next month.

His father, Amedeo Quirino, has flown from Manchester to Italy to be with his family.

The villa has been cordoned off by police, who are investigating how the gate toppled over.

It is believed the family have been living in Manchester since 2015.

A friend of the family told the Manchester Evening News: ‘I feel sick. It absolutely breaks my heart. I have a son the same age and Angelo would have been going to school in a couple of weeks.’
