Christmas ice rink scrapped as it's 'bad for environment'... and replaced with festive roller disco

A Christmas ice rink in Bristol has been scrapped and replaced with a roller disco - over fears it is ‘bad for the environment’.

The Millennium Square ice rink in the centre of the city has attracted crowds of 30,000 people each festive season.

But after the recent climate emergency declaration, the skate venue will be replaced with a BUMP roller disco from November 15 to December 5.

Festive ice skating will now be replaced with roller skating lessons - plus a chance to roller skate with non other than Santa himself.

The decision comes on the back of the recent climate emergency declaration - with a local science centre spearheading an environmental pledge for the city.

We The Curious is the first centre of its kind in the world to pledge to make Bristol a carbon neutral city by 2030.

Reacting to the news on Facebook, one user said in support of the decision: “LOVE THIS! Have always thought it ridiculous to create ice rinks in this climate - the energy it must take/waste! Well done We the Curious!”

And although the news was welcomed by some, a few fans told of their disappointment, with one simply writing: “How sad.”

We The Curious head of operations, Lydia Ladbrooke, told Bristol 24/7: "After reviewing the energy consumption of running an ice rink, we took the decision to remove it going forward.

"But we are keen to continue to create a positive fun seasonal offer for our city.

"We can’t achieve all of our aims in one go, so it’s a step-by-step process that we need to work on with our partners.

"By evolving the activities and replacing the ice rink with a more energy-efficient alternative, we’re heading in the right direction."
