Paul Potts has 'defended' Britain's Got Talent acts Innocent Masuku and Sydnie Christmas after the singers were both faced with accusations that it's 'unfair' they're even on the show, following the discovery of their already successful careers. And the show's first ever winner has not held back, telling critics the show is not 'Britain’s Got Amateurs' in a strongly worded response on social media.

Appearing right at the end of Sunday's edition of the hit ITV show, Innocent stunned everyone inside the London Palladium as he performed well known opera song Caruso, bringing both the judges and the audience to their feet. Amanda Holden gave Innocent a massive compliment, telling him he was the best opera singer Britain's Got Talent had 'ever had' as she put him above both Paul and 2009 runner up and worldwide star Susan Boyle in her estimations.

Given the high praise he received, BGT viewers were left in shock that Innocent wasn't rewarded with a Golden Buzzer, with his amazing performance coming at the end of a weekend which saw Amanda hit the Golden Buzzer for Sydnie, Ant and Dec do the same for taekwondo group Ssaulabi and Alesha putting choir Ravi's Dream straight through to the semi finals.

Since their auditions aired, Innocent and Sydnie have found themselves at the centre of some controversy, after it emerged that he is with the English National Opera and has appeared in the London production of Carmen, while she has starred in shows like Grease and Starlight Express.

Paul, who won the very first series of Britain's Got Talent back in 2007, has now waded in on the 'fix' claims, appearing to dismiss the criticism aimed at Sydnie and Innocent, taking to X to write: "I see there’s the usual furore over a professional singer doing well on @bgt. IIt’s not called Britain’s Got Amateurs. There has never been a rule that you had to be an amateur. Being untrained isn’t such a good thing. Very few singers voices would survive without at least some"

Moving onto talk about Innocent specifically he posted: "I've seen Innocent perform the wonderful Caruso online. I was on stage when @BGT was on. Great voice. @BGT isn't Highlander. There can be more than one of a type of act that is an ambassador for the show. Good luck to all contestants on the show. get what U can from it for YOU"
