British Police Catch Motorists Using Phones While Driving in Undercover Operation

Police in South Yorkshire, England, detected nearly 200 traffic offenses, including 41 instances of using a handheld mobile phone while driving, during a four-day operation in the county that ended on March 10.

Officers used an unmarked heavy goods vehicle to pull up next to unsuspecting drivers and look into their vehicles, with video showing a number of incidents where drivers were using their phones or not wearing a seatbelt while driving.

A total of 185 drivers were stopped during the operation. Of those, 179 were operating light goods vehicles, and six were driving cars. Fifteen drivers were found not to be in proper control of their vehicle, 73 were not wearing a seatbelt, and 10 were driving without due care and attention, police said.
