A school in Tunbridge Wells has been forced to close today (Friday, June 14) due to a burst water main. Bennett Memorial Diocesan School and its Sixth Form found at Culverden Down will only be open for students sitting GCSE or A-Level exams today.

Meanwhile, all other students will need to log onto Teams, where they will be assigned their work for the day. The school has confirmed that repair works to the burst main are now underway, with an aim for the school to re-open fully on Monday, June 17.

A Bennett Memorial spokesperson said: “Please note that there is limited access to running and drinking water. Therefore, no food will be available from the kitchens today. Toilets in the Rochester building are available for students taking exams.

“Examination students should, therefore, bring food and water with them.” Parents with children sitting an exam today who usually receive a free school meal and would therefore like a packed lunch provided are advised to contact enquiries@bennett.kent.sch.uk to make arrangements.

Key workers or those with vulnerable children who now face difficulties due to the school closure are encouraged to email senco@bennett.kent.sch.uk to make alternate arrangements. Bennett Memorial is a co-educational academy for pupils aged 11 to 18 and currently holds an Ofsted rating of ‘Outstanding’, the highest rating a school can achieve.
