Bus, train and airport strikes were due to cause chaos on transport routes in London today but some of the planned industrial action has been suspended. Today, May 8, nine train services are on strike as announced by the ASLEF Union who also held industrial action yesterday (May 7).

Although strikes are planned throughout the whole month, Wednesday, May 8 was set to be the most impacted. Train drivers will be walking out from over pay and working conditions with several routes affected this morning.

The train drivers' union Aslef said: "The dispute is to get train drivers, who have not had an increase in salary for five years, since their last pay deals expired in 2019, the pay rise they deserve." National Rail has said that on May 8 it is likely that little or no services across large areas of the network will take place. It is advised you check before you travel on the National Rail website.

BUS STRIKES SUSPENDED

Bus strikes were expected to cause yet more travel disruption today and until Friday May 10, but they have since been suspended. Around 40 bus company staff at Transport UK were set to go on strike today. The staff who work in the control rooms, controlling the bus routes, instructing drivers on traffic jams and accidents and ensuring the overall safety of routes would have been walking out over pay.

However, on May 2, Unite the Union declared that the strikes have been suspended as a 'goodwill gesture' as a new improved offer was made following extensive negotiations.

In a statement they said: "Industrial action due to be taken by 40 bus company staff in control rooms in Battersea and Twickenham beginning on 8 May has been suspended, Unite the union announced today (2 May).

"Following extensive negotiations a new improved offer was tabled by the employer and, as a result, the impending strike action was suspended to allow members to consider and vote on the latest offer."

Unite regional Maxine Loza said: "Transport UK has come forward with a new pay offer that will now be put to a ballot of our members. As a goodwill gesture, Unite is suspending the planned industrial action that was due to begin next week."

Members of Unite were due to walk out yesterday and today. The union said strikes planned for May 9-13 are still due to go ahead pending the outcome of any further negotiations.

Unite regional officer Wayne King said: " Heathrow Airport and Unite have been in discussions and as a goodwill gesture prior to formal talks early next week we have suspended strike action on the Tuesday and Wednesday.

"We are calling on Heathrow to recognise the anger among our members over proposed outsourcing plans and to think again."
