What did you miss?

In a tearful phone call at the end of the Call the Midwife series 13 finale, Trixie told her husband Matthew that she was jetting off to New York City to join him. So we've lost Olly Rix and, for now, it looks like we might have lost Helen George as well.

Fans have promptly started freaking out about the departure of an original Call the Midwife star, but it's worth noting a few clear signs that Trixie might not be gone forever — or even for very long at all.

Who, what and why?

Viewers saw Trixie struggling throughout the finale episode, dealing with a reliance on sleeping pills that led to her setting herself on fire in an accident at work. After a conversation with her brother, she was convinced that following Matthew was the right thing to do.

Trixie told Matthew she was "coming out to join you" so they could try "building from the ground up, just like proper newlyweds".

Matthew, though, mentioned several times during the phone call that their time in New York would only be temporary and that he could manage the deal remotely after four or five months.

None of this provided much comfort to fans on Twitter, who were very concerned they'd seen the last of Trixie after 12 years on our screens.

Numerous outlets have reported that George will not be leaving the show and that we can expect to see Trixie sooner rather than later. However, the storyline has certainly landed in a place that means we might not see her again soon.

Call the Midwife has been confirmed for at least two more series, and it would be a shame not to see Helen George take up her rightful place among the show's ensemble.

What else happened on Call the Midwife?

Georgie Glen took centre stage for much of the Call the Midwife finale, as part of a harrowing storyline involving her seriously ill long-lost son. Elsewhere, Joyce finally managed to get her blackmailing husband off her back and the Turner family learned they would be able to complete May's permanent adoption.
