Canal Water Sloshes in Channel as Powerful Quake Hits Japan

The power of the earthquake that struck Japan’s Noto peninsula on New Year’s Day was remarkably demonstrated a short distance to the south, in Tonami, where a woman recorded canal water sloshing from side to side in its channel.

Rie Yakushi, who recorded the video, said she was on the way to her parents’ house in Toyama prefecture. It was “scary” to see the water “shaking so much,” she said.

By Wednesday morning, at least 65 people were confirmed to have died, national broadcaster NHK reported, citing officials. Credit: Rie Yakushi via Storyful
