Car displaying false number plates seized in Breightmet

Bolton Police have seized a car from a road in Breightmet.

Police checks on the red Toyota car revealed it was displaying false number plates – with the real vehicle still parked on the registered keeper’s driveway.

Police have seized the car from Burnmoor Road in order for further inquiries.

According to a Freedom of Information request by company Carwow, the number of people contact the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) about correspondence, fines or penalties for their vehicles which they did not accept responsibility for had risen from 1,248 in 2013 to 9,850 cases in 2013 – nearly an eight times increase.

However, some of these cases could be due to human error.

According to the British Number Plate Manufacturers Association, a company must be registered with the DVLA to sell or make number plates, and must record details of every plate made.

Police, or people appointed by local authorities, may enter registered premises at any time to inspect number plates, or to take copies of records.

Companies supplying number plates which do not keep records for a period of three years could be fined up to £1,000 and suspended from the register, the BNPMA says.
