A car parked in a retail park went up in flames after an "accidental ignition".

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service confirmed a crew was called to Liverpool Shopping Park, off Edge Lane, at around 2.40pm today, Thursday, May 2 following reports of a car fire. The fire engine arrived five minutes later and found one vehicle in the car park involved in the fire.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: "A firefighter wearing breathing apparatus used a hose reel jet under general observation to extinguish the fire. The cause was determined to be accidental ignition." Images sent to the ECHO showed the incident happened outside the JD Sports store on the retail park.

The image showed a firefighter tackling the car blaze inside a cordon that had been erected by Merseyside Police. A video also seen by the ECHO showed the front of the car engulfed in flames with black smoke billowing from the front.
