Car review: BMW X2 xDrive 20d Sport

BMW’s X cars are basically SUV versions of their existing saloons, although the latest model, the X2, slightly breaks with this rule. The company sees it as the “cool rebel in the X family”.

It is based on the X1 platform but shares only door handles and the shark-fin roof antenna with its slightly more practical sibling. The X2 has a swooping roofline and shows more dynamic aspirations, so in effect it is a sporty coupe/SUV crossover.

In locking horns with such fine cars as the Volvo XC40, Audi Q3, Jaguar E-Pace and Mercedes GLA it has its work cut out, but the BMW drives well and looks the part, even if at between £29,990 and £38,330 it seems a bit pricey. Some of the well specced cars at the launch were well north of £44,000.

The styling involves plenty of parallel lines to make the car look broader, and for once the famous kidney grille is wider at the bottom than the top. All models have large side air intakes, twin exhausts and BMW roundels in the rear pillar – something previously reserved for top sports models.

At launch the only engine available was the 20d 2.0 diesel with 187bhp, mated to an eight-speed auto box which shifts seamlessly between gears. It pulls well and revs willingly, although it can bet a bit noisy when pushed. The ride can be rather firm and choppy on some surfaces and visibility isn’t helped by huge door pillars and a small rear window.

The cabin quality is good with plenty of legroom and headroom front and rear, despite the swooping roofline. Upper trim levels also get slightly gaudy mood lighting. The infotainment system is probably the best in its class.

BMW is aiming the X2 at younger drivers and many will probably opt for the £1,260 Tech Pack which includes an eight-inch touchscreen and admirably clear head-up display.

Other engine options will follow, including a lower powered 18d, a 2.0-litre petrol and 2.5-litre petrol and diesel.

This is a good-looking, luxurious and efficient addition to the small, premium, sporty SUV category. It may look a bit pricey but it packs a reasonable punch.
