Cardiff student dies after being hit by car while walking dog

A Cardiff University student has died after being hit by a car. Lucy Atkins, 20, was out walking her Lakeland terrier dog Simba when both were fatally struck.

"Energetic and talented" Lucy, who had just completed her first year studying for a BSc in Business Management at Cardiff Business School, died in the incident in Birmingham on Monday morning. She has been described as someone who "brought joy and fun into the lives of all she met" and was eagerly anticipating moving into a house with her friends for her second year from September.

Professor Rachel Ashworth, dean and head of Cardiff Business School, told BirminghamLive: "Staff and students at Cardiff Business School are devastated at the sudden loss of Lucy Atkins. Lucy was an energetic, engaged, and talented student who had such a passion for learning.

"She was always surrounded by friends and her smile was constant. We are heartbroken but incredibly thankful that Lucy chose Cardiff and brought such positivity, kindness, and light to our business school. In a heartfelt statement Lucy’s parents and brother said: "Lucy was a fabulous daughter who was full of life and who brought joy and fun into the lives of all she met. She was a force of nature who lived life to the full. She was a former pupil of World's End Nursery, St Peter's School, Harborne, The Bluecoat School in Harborne, and then Edgbaston High School.

"Lucy had just finished her first year at Cardiff University and was looking forward to sharing a house with her friends for her second year. The family now ask for privacy and time to grieve. We want to thank all those people who tried to save them, both passers-by and members of the emergency services, and all those who have left tributes at the scene and sent messages of condolence."

The fatal crash occurred in West Boulevard in the Quinton area of Birmingham shortly before 8.45am on June 24. Lucy suffered severe injuries after being struck by a vehicle while walking.
