Yahoo News Catastrophe star defends breaking her own rules with new show
Catastrophe co-creator Sharon Horgan has defended breaking her own rules for her new show Modern Love.
Amazon's adaptation of the hit New York Times column features an all-star cast of international stars, writers and directors each telling one-off stories about the complexities of contemporary relationships.
Horgan's episode stars 30 Rock's Tina Fey and Mad Men's John Slattery as a long-married couple attending therapy as a last-ditch effort to avoid divorce.
Speaking to Digital Spy exclusively about Modern Love, Horgan admitted that she actually hadn't wanted to return to writing about a couple's romantic relationship so soon after Catastrophe.
"I really was trying to avoid something that involved a couple because even though Modern Love, the column, is about love, it's all different kinds of love," she explained. "And so I kind of thought it would be good to steer away from that because of Catastrophe and Divorce.
"And then I read this letter and it just really stood out for me. It was really beautifully written and it had these themes running through it and you've got the tennis matches, which begin as a sort of battleground and end with a symphony between them.
"And I just thought it could be really nice to show the arc of a relationship through that.
"I just really liked how she wrote it and I could sort of see, structurally, the letter played around with time a little bit and I thought I haven’t done that before – and so I did it despite not wanting to do a typical story initially, but hopefully it's not so typical."
Horgan also pointed out that the appeal of the Modern Love series is that – like the column – it looks at a relatable topic from so many different perspectives.
"The subject matter is a big part of it and there's something quite gorgeous about the idea of diving into a bunch of stories about love," she said. "And it's got this mad cast as well, which can't not help."
Modern Love – which also features Anne Hathaway, Dev Patel, Sofia Boutella and Andrew Scott – premieres on Amazon Prime Video on Friday (October 18).
