The Catch-up: How bad is Storm Freya going to be this weekend?

What’s happening?

Storm Freya is set to bring strong winds, dangerous conditions and travel disruptions to Britain after February’s record-breaking high temperatures and sunshine, according to the Met Office. Forecasters predict the storm will hit on Sunday afternoon and be severe enough to risk injuries and danger to life from flying debris and large waves.

Where’s it going to hit?

The Met Office has issued a severe weather warning that runs from 3pm on Sunday to 6am on Monday with gusts are expected to hit around 65mph. Some areas may experience gusts of up to 80mph. The warning covers significant chunks the UK, including Wales, south-west England, the Midlands, northern England and parts of southern Scotland. Wind speeds are expected to be highest in Devon, Cornwall, Wales and north-west England. The storm may also bring snow to areas more than 200 to 300-metres above sea level but temperatures will be “probably just above average for the time of year”.

What to expect

– Road, rail , air and ferry services are expect to be hit
– Closure to some road and bridges
– Some damage to buildings and trees

Rapper jailed for eight-and-a-half years over Bestival death

A rapper who filmed the daughter of Holby City actor John Michie as she died from a drug overdose at Bestival has been jailed for eight and a half years. Ceon Broughton, 30, ignored his girlfriend Louella Fletcher-Michie’s pleas for help and took disturbing video footage and pictures on his phone as she slipped into unconsciousness over the course of six hours. Woman who lived with her heart in a rucksack dies

A woman who carried her artificial heart in a rucksack following life saving surgery has died. Rebecca Henderson, 24, died at Harefield Hospital on Wednesday following transplant complications, her family and friends have said. Her mother Linda tweeted: “We’re going to miss our amazing, wonderful daughter. She touched so many lives and lived her life to the fullest. MSC Bellissima, the biggest cruise ship ever to be christened in the UK, celebrates her naming ceremony in Southampton this weekend. The 172,000-tonne ship, which has 19 decks, will set sail on a ten-night inaugural cruise to Genoa on Monday. As you can see from this remarkable timelapse footage, building the 5,686 passenger ship was a huge operation.

The government is to pay Eurotunnel tens of millions of pounds over Transport secretary Chris Grayling’s no-deal Brexit ferry contracts. The Channel Tunnel operator took court action against the Department of Transport over the ‘secretive’ process to award contracts worth £108m. The decision by Grayling to award the contract attracted widespread criticism and ridicule after it emerged that one company, Seaborne Freight, had no ships and had never run a ferry service.
