CAUGHT: Notorious gangster pictured smirking in arrest after weeks on the run

This is the moment notorious gangster Daniel Gee was arrested following weeks on the run after fleeing from a North East prison.

Cleveland Police confirmed Daniel Gee who absconded from Kirklevington Prison in Stockton on Monday, May 27, was arrested in Wigan yesterday, Tuesday (June 25).

He was pictured smirking as officers handcuffed him before leading him away.

A Cleveland Police spokesperson said: "Big thanks to our colleagues at Merseyside Police for arresting him. Gee is currently in police custody and will be returned to prison."

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "We can confirm that Daniel Gee, who had absconded from prison, was detained on Tuesday in Wigan by officers from Merseyside Police.

"Gee absconded from Kirklevington Prison in Stockton-on-Tees on Monday 27 May and extensive efforts had been ongoing to locate him since.

"He is currently in police custody and will be returned to prison."

The Merseyside gangster was originally jailed on an indeterminate sentence for the public's protection in 2010 following his conviction for gun offences after he plotted to arm himself to take revenge against a teenager.

The courts heard he had plotted to arm himself after making death threats to a 16-year-old gunman.

At a trial in October 2009, Gee was found guilty of two counts of threats to kill and another two of blackmail.

Gee was housed in Kirklevington Grange Category D open prison at the time of his escape.

Police made numerous appeals for information, including releasing CCTV images of him getting on a train in Middlesbrough, bound for Darlington.

Investigators also had CCTV footage, showing Daniel Gee boarding the 2:16pm train from Darlington to Liverpool Lime Street on Tuesday, May 28.
