Changes at this landmark Hereford building will 'brighten up street'

Planned improvements have been revealed to a prominent Hereford building that is to become a new venue for out-of-hours doctors’ appointments.

The Nelson Building in the city’s Whitecross Road is being taken on by Taurus Healthcare, a not-for-profit company providing the service in the county.

It wants to move the service there in the autumn from the Station Medical Centre.

According to a planning application it has now submitted (number 240892), Taurus wants to “create a secured fenced and gated garden” for its staff in front of the Nelson Building, which would be separated from the street by new grey metal railings and a native hedgerow.

“This will have the benefit of improving the visual appeal of the street scene, as well as providing security and tidying the visual appearance of the site which currently has poor landscaping,” the application says.

Meanwhile there will be a new visitor entrance from the car park to the rear of the building, including a new pergola with a louvred “brise-soleil” roof.

New CCTV cameras would also be installed at the main entrance and on the sides of the building.

Dating from the 1990s, the building was previously used by Herefordshire Council and then by its services provider Hoople.
