Chelsea need to convince Edin Dzeko over transfer as Roma team-mate Emerson Palmieri heads to London

Edin Dzeko wants reassurances of regular football before agreeing to join Chelsea as Emerson Palmieri is set to fly to London to complete a switch to Stamford Bridge.

As Standard Sport reported on Friday, Chelsea want to sign both AS Roma players and will hold more talks with the Serie A club today.

The Blues are prepared to offer £44m for the duo, but Roma have asked for another £13.2m in add-ons.

Dzeko is understood to have initially reacted angrily to Roma's willingness to sell him just a month after he bought an expensive house in the city.

The Bosnia international striker, who has scored 61 goals in 117 appearances for the club since 2015, was committed to seeing out the remaining two years left on his contract.

However, Roma need to raise £36.7m to help them comply with Financial Fair Play so are willing to negotiate.

Brazilian left wing back Emerson is on the verge of joining Chelsea regardless, but Dzeko will take more convincing.

The 31-year-old is a first team regular at Roma and is worried about being on the bench behind Alvaro Morata under coach Antonio Conte, who wants a more experienced back-up forward than Michy Batshuayi.

Dzeko will also be cup-tied in the Champions League having already played in the competition for Roma this term - he scored twice against Chelsea in a 3-3 draw three months ago.

Dzeko played 84 minutes of Roma's 1-1 draw at Inter Milan last night and Roma sporting director Monchi hinted that it could be his last appearance for the club.

Emerson was an unused substitute and when asked if both players were joining Chelsea, Monchi replied: "Whatever will be will be. I work every day to have players suitable to replace our players, my job is always to strengthen my club. If Dzeko leaves Roma, we'll buy another player."

Sources in Italy suggest Emerson will travel to London today or tomorrow in order to undergo a medical and discuss personal terms.

The 23-year-old will cost in the region of £20m and provide competition for Marcos Alonso in the squad.

Batshuayi, who impressed in Chelsea's 4-0 win over Brighton on Saturday, is unlikely to join Roma as a replacement for Dzeko.

The prospect of Roma signing Batshuayi on loan has been included as part of the negotiations over Dzeko.

Yet coach Eusebio di Francesco is believed to want an Italian forward to replace his main goal-scorer.

Monchi might still look to sell former Chelsea target Radja Nainggolan to Guangzhou Evergrande instead of Dzeko. But Di Francesco wants the midfielder to stay.

Chelsea have made inquiries for a number of frontmen this month, including Peter Crouch and Andy Carroll, both of which were rejected by Stoke and West Ham respectively.

They have also been linked with Burnley's Ashley Barnes and West Ham's Marko Arnautovic, but neither club are interested in selling or loaning their assets.
