Children airlifted to hospital after being hit by school bus

Three children are recovering in hospital after being airlifted from their school gates when five pupils were hit by a school bus.

Dozens of children were waiting to go home outside two neighbouring schools when the bus careered out of control and mounted the kerb. 

Locals said they believed the driver suffered a medical episode shortly before the accident and lost control. 

Five children were hit by the bus while waiting to go home after classes.

Five primary school children have been injured after being hit by a school bus as they waited to go home.

The children were hit by the bus outside a high school in the town of Llanfair Caereinion in Wales.

Police said a "school bus and a number of young pedestrians" were involved in the collision at about 3.25pm on Monday.

Three children were airlifted to hospital, while a fourth was driven there by ambulance. A fifth child was discharged at the scene.

The male driver of the bus was taken to hospital by ambulance. There were no passengers on the bus at the time of the incident.

The four children and the driver remain in hospital, all in a stable condition, police said.

The bus mounted a kerb and collided with metal fencing.

The children who were airlifted to hospital were taken by the Wales Air Ambulance.

Dyfed-Powys Police said the collision took place on School Lane, just off Neuadd Lane, in Llanfair Caereinion.

On Tuesday, a police spokesperson told Yahoo News UK the investigation is continuing into what happened.

They said: "One man and four children remain in hospital and are described as being in a stable condition at this time. One child was discharged from medical care yesterday. The children are primary school-aged.

"There were no passengers on the bus.

"The bus has been removed for forensic examination and the road has reopened.

"Police Community Support Officers and School Community Police Officers will be attending the school this morning to provide support.”

One resident said: "This is such a quiet place and this is quite shocking."

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesperson told Yahoo News UK: “We were called to an incident in Llanfair Caereinon this afternoon at 15.26pm involving a vehicle and five children.

"Three of the five children were flown to hospital for treatment, while another child and an adult were taken to hospital by land ambulance. The remaining child was discharged at scene.”

Powys County Council said its officers were in the town to provide support following the incident.
