Chilling footage shows moment police arrest murderer Ahmed Alid on Hartlepool street

Ahmed Alid had left his shared home on Wharton Terrace, after stabbing his housemate in the early hours of that October morning.

His other housemate, Ariyan Karimi, had made a frantic 999 call and the police were on their way as former body builder Javed Nouri lay up against his bedroom door, suffering heavy blood loss. The call captured Alid's shouts of "Allahu Akbar" - meaning "God is greatest" - as he launched the frenzied attack on Mr Nouri, who was asleep.

Alid, 45, next happened upon innocent Terrence Carney, 70, on Hartlepool's Raby Road, and despite the poor man's cries, Alid stabbed him to death - with one wound fatally penetrating pensioner's heart. Muttering to himself, and nursing his injured hand, Alid - in his own words - was on a "raid".

This is the moment Counter Terrorism officers spotted Alid, at around 5.30am on York Road:

At the same time, other officers reached 4 Wharton Terrace - where Javed Nouri, 31, lay injured and his fellow Iranian national Ariyan Karimi, was locked himself in the bathroom, fearing for his life:

Alid later made full confessions to the police - telling them he had killed one innocent man. He said: "The poor British man is a victim. They have killed children and I have killed an old man" before continuing, through a Tunisian translator "Britain created Israel and should make it leave. If I hadn't have been injured, I would have killed more. I'm ready for Shahada (martyrdom)."

Moroccan Alid arrived in Middlesbrough in 2020. He was later housed in the Home Office approved accommodation on Wharton Terrace in Hartlepool, with three other asylum seekers. Although he denied it during his trial, his hatred for Javed Nouri was because he saw him as an "apostate." Mr Nouri had converted from his Muslim faith and embraced new beliefs and friends at Hartlepool's Baptist Christian church.

Alid - a devout Muslim - became angry when his housemates kept beer in the fridge; and one housemate had a girlfriend who stayed over. Ariyan Karimi and Mohammed Karimi were "scared" of Alid, according to Mr Nouri, because Alid sat in the kitchen watching news of the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel.

Mr Nouri told the court that Alid "laughed and praised God" as he listened to the news. Mr Nouri went into the kitchen to cook for the others, who stayed in a bedroom playing computer games.

Whilst Mr Nouri said he was not intimidated by Alid, he felt he was a danger. "I have seen something terrible and frightening in his eyes," he said.

Alid came into the UK illegally, on a ferry from Amsterdam in 2020. He was arrested because he had no visa, and he then claimed asylum. He had spent the years before trying to claim asylum in a myriad of countries - including Spain, Italy, and Greece. He was locked up in Germany for entering the country without a passport or visa.

Alid ventured to Scandinavia - but was unsuccessful in all of his asylum attempts. The trained patisserie chef wanted to settle down and open a shop.

During his trial, he said that he had owned a grocery shop in Algeria, but that he had left the country where he grew up, because "intelligence services were harassing me. Watching the shop."

Alid told the court that he was still waiting for a response to his 2020 asylum application, when he carried out the attacks. He will be sentenced for the murder, attempted murder and two counts of assaulting an emergency worker, on May 17.
