Designing buildings may be their day job, but it seems, for architects, baking is a piece of cake too.

A chocolate cake model of the Barbican has been crowned the winner of WATG’s Great Architectural Bake Off.

As a highlight of the London Festival of Architecture, some of the biggest names in the field set aside the pencils and picked up the spatula for a battle to make the best gourmet versions of iconic buildings and landmarks over the weekend.

The “Barbicake”, crafted by Benoy studio, was made from a mix of chocolate fudge, wafers, blueberry swirl, ginger and Nutella.

Other stand-out entries included an edible London Aquatics Centre by Zaha Hadid Architects, which won tastiest bake, and the Imperial War Musuem by Stride Treglown, which received an honourable mention for the use of wartime flavours.

Great British Bake Off competitor and architect Tom Hetherington was on the judging panel, also made up of former RIBA president Jane Duncan, Peter Murray, founder of the London Festival of Architecture and Tamsie Thomson, director of the festival.
