Clarence House: Where is the royal residence and who lives there?

Clarence House staff have been told that their jobs are at risk following the Queen’s death and King Charles III accession to the throne.

Staff members were told that some redundancies at Clarence House were “unavoidable” now that Charles and Camilla have become King and Queen Consort, respectively, as reported by The Guardian.

Many staff members reportedly believed that they would be absorbed into the King’s new household.

But they were told on Monday – during the thanksgiving service for the Queen, at St Giles’s Cathedral in Edinburgh – that they could be made redundant.

Private secretaries, the finance office, the communications team, and other loyal household employees were among those who received the notice.

A Clarence House spokesperson said: “Following last week’s accession, the operations of the household of the former Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall have ceased and, as required by law, a consultation process has begun.

“Our staff have given long and loyal service and, while some redundancies will be unavoidable, we are working urgently to identify alternative roles for the greatest possible number of staff.”

Clarence House was the official residence of King Charles III and Queen Camilla before the Queen’s death.

They have lived there since August 2003. The royal couple moved there following the Queen Mother’s death in 2002, as she had lived there since 1953.

Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip also moved to Clarence House in 1947 after getting married.

Clarence House is also home to the former the Prince of Wales’s household, who support Charles and Camilla with their official engagements.

Where will Charles and Camilla live now?

The King and Queen are intending to remain at Clarence House while building work is carried out at Buckingham Palace.

However, Buckingham Palace will serve as their official office. The King has already hosted a series of audiences with the PM, cabinet ministers, and realm high commissioners at the palace.
