Staring at the camera, his face covered, his arms tense and holding a large silver knife with a thick set handle, in these shocking photos Bardia Shojaeifard is a far cry away from the young boy looking terrified in a courtroom dock awaiting his sentence for murder.

Shojaeifard tried to tell a jury at Leeds Crown Court he was scared of 15-year-old Alfie Lewis. That Alfie had threatened to kill him. That he had gone to school with a knife hidden in his trousers on November 7 last year because he was terrified of what could happen if he did not protect himself.

He said he had tried to "scare" Alfie away by waving the knife. But 15 people told the jury of what they had seen. And what they had seen was Shojaeifard purposefully walk towards Alfie and stab him a number of times - once through the heart. The fake persona he put on for the jury was just that.

But even if he didn't put that mask on, mobile phone evidence would have uncovered the truth. With their dogged police work, officers at West Yorkshire Police discovered Shojaeifard had a sinister interest in knives. He had posed with the weapon, and had kept images of them on his phone.

The sentencing judge, The Honourable Mr Justice Cotter, told Shojaeifard as he handed him a life sentence with a minimum term of 13 years that he had an "interest in knives" and images of knives on his phone, and he took the knife with him in case he "spotted" Alfie, which he did.

The judge added: "Knives used by young people have stolen so many lives and you and others need to understand how dangerous this obsession is... Without your interest in knives, Alfie would be here today."

From the way Shojaeifard was detailed to the court it is clear there are two sides to him. One presented by his barrister was that of caring, clever Bardia who grew up in a loving and supportive family, did well at school and even played football with Alfie Lewis.

The other is the one that ripped his once-friend away from his heartbroken friends and family. Who could not see past his anger as Alfie told him to "calm down" and asked "what are you doing?" as he was attacked.

This side came out on a number of occasions. Shojaeifard had offered to fight another boy in July last year, and it seems this fight is where he got his idea for "revenge" on Alfie. He was asked as he gave evidence if he was "humiliated" when the filmed fight did not go his way and he ended on the floor, being struck by a number of people including Alfie.

He claimed to have also been threatened by Alfie as he went to let off fireworks on Halloween last year. He managed to get away with them, but claimed Alfie had said he would kill him then.

This cowering schoolboy stood in the witness box at Leeds Crown Court couldn't have seemed more different to the smirking, arrogant teen seen in these personal pictures. The same boy who ran from the crime scene holding aloft the weapon he had taken Alfie's life with.

Switching between the two personalities seemed easy enough for Shojaeifard, who now says he will be "haunted" by what he has done for the rest of his life. But that haunting, that apparent remorse, was not present in court and has not been since he began to stand trial.

An earlier hearing at the Magistrates' court saw members in the room almost reduced to tears as a woman believed to be his mother cried as she stood outside the dock. Emotion stirred in Shojaeifard's face but that now seems to be replaced by a stony face and an inability to take responsibility for what he has done to another boy, another family.

As he sentenced Shojaeifard, The Honourable Mr Justice Cotter gave him an order to live his life and make Alfie proud. He said: "Why you chose to do what you did, no one will ever know...

"You will be able to have an enjoyable life, a family, career and other experiences and you took all of this away from Alfie who will forever be 15-years-old as you cut his life short...

"Whatever you say or do cannot bring him back. But from this point on, you can try and honour his life by doing something with your life before and after.

"You are a clever young man and must do something with your life and make Alfie proud. It is the very least you owe him and his life."
