Comic Con issues statement as Bernard Hill dies just days after cancelling appearance

Comic Con has paid tribute to Bernard Hill, who has died at the age of 79, just days after he cancelled his appearance at the event.

The actor best known for his role as Yosser Hughes in Alan Bleasdale's seminal TV drama 'Boys from the Blackstuff' and as Théoden, King of Rohan, in 'The Lord of the Rings' film trilogy has sadly died aged 79. Mr Hill had been due to attend Comic Con Liverpool this weekend, but was urged to cancel last minute.

It was confirmed to the ECHO by his agent Lou Coulson Associates that Mr Hill died in the early hours of this morning (May 5).

Comic Con have released a statement following the saddening news. In a statement on X, formerly known as Twitter, Comic Con Liverpool said: "We’re heartbroken to hear the news of Bernard Hill’s passing. A great loss. Thinking of his family at this very sad time, and wishing them a lot of strength."

The actor was born in Manchester in December 1944 and his acting career lasted six decades. He also starred in 'Shirley Valentine', as well as Captain Edward Smith in the 1997 smash hit 'Titanic'. Mr Hill is also a cast member of the second series of 'The Responder', written by Liverpudlian Tony Schumacher. The first episode airs on BBC tonight.

The actor married his actress wife, Marianna Hill, 44 years ago. They met in 1976 and were dating for one year before getting married in 1977. The couple live in Suffolk and have a son, named Gabriel. He has been a long time supporter of Manchester United FC.
