A mechanic has highlighted the most frequent reason for MOT failures, which can be avoided for as little as £1. Iain Ferguson, an automotive and repair expert at Glasgow Kelvin College, has urged motorists to regularly check their vehicle's lights to avoid failing their MOT.

He advised: "Faulty lights are a common failure during MOTs. During lighter nights, drivers often fail to properly check their lights and just assume they are all working as they should. Checking your lights regularly, even during those summer months, can make all the difference when your MOT comes along."

"Replace any bulbs that are not working with the appropriate type."

Ferguson also emphasised the importance of ensuring headlights are correctly aligned. According to Kwik Fit, this involves locating the headlight adjustment screws and using a screwdriver to adjust them until they're at the correct level.

The car manual will typically indicate where these screws can be found, reports Birmingham Live.

For most vehicles, accessing the screws requires removing the trim around the headlight, usually found within the headlight housing itself. Should any lights be defective, replacement bulbs are readily available online or at most car accessory stores, often costing less than £1.

In a public statement, Iain warned: "Suspension faults have quickly moved into second spot for common test failure. This is due mostly to the condition of the road surfaces. With so many potholes, it puts a huge increased strain on suspension components."

Adding to this, he further advised: "You should periodically inspect your suspension system for signs of wear or damage, as well as uneven wear patterns on your tyres, which can indicate suspension issues."
