Jeremy Corbyn is a Gryffindor while Theresa May would be in Slytherin according to a poll of Harry Potter fans.

Today marks the 20th anniversary of the publication of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, the first of JK Rowling's massively popular wizarding series.

To celebrate, YouGov have polled more than a 1,000 Potter fans to ask them which celebrities would belong to each of the four houses at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Gryffindor - the house of Harry Potter himself and the one most associated with courage and chivalry - is apparently the natural home of Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, with 31 per cent of respondents placing him there.

Corbyn would be sorted into Gryffindor alongside the likes of Judi Dench, David Attenborough, Andy Murray and the Queen according to the poll.

Theresa May, meanwhile, is a Slytherin - indicating that she is ambitious and cunning but displays leadership and resourcefulness.

May would join Donald Trump, Kim Kardashian and Piers Morgan in the Slytherin ranks.

There is a large amount of subtext when it comes to Hogwarts houses with most of the main heroes in the books being placed in Gryffindor and most of the less sympathetic characters in Slytherin. This will undoubtedly have informed people's choices.

Mery Berry was the clearest Hufflepuff according to the responses with 38 per cent believing she'd fit best into the house associated with hard work, patience and loyalty.

She joins Adele, Robbie Williams, Ant & Dec and Taylor Swift in the house best known for being that of general tragic heartthrob Cedric Diggory.

Hermione is the nation's favourite

The poll also asked people to nominate their three favourite characters from the Harry Potter books, films or both.

Hermione Granger, the books' main female character, emerged as favourite with 27 per cent of people putting her in their top three.

This corresponds to an increase in the number of people naming their children after Hermione in the past 20 years.

The intelligent witch played by actress Emma Watson in the movies has inspired over 1,700 new Hermiones in England and Wales since 1997.

The name particularly shot up in popularity in 2003, the year Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix was released after a three-year wait from the fourth installment.

Albus Dumbledore, headmaster of Hogwarts for most of the narrative, was the joint next most popular character along with Harry Potter while Dobby the Elf and Hogwarts potions master Severus Snape tied for fourth.
