Viewers will be forced to pick a side (well, or use on demand) for their soap choices over the festive period.

EastEnders and Coronation Street will be heading for a rare clash in the schedules on New Year’s Day, it has emerged.

The veteran dramas will go head-to-head with their hour-long festive special episodes at 8pm on BBC One and ITV.

Emmerdale and EastEnders have often faced scheduling clashes in the past, but the channel’s flagship soaps hardly ever.

And both shows will be heading for some climactic storylines.

Never one to shy away from Christmas misery, EastEnders will be ramping up the festive tension in the Slater household, with Kat finding out about Alfie’s infidelity and the paternity of her cousin Hayley’s baby.

Corrie, meanwhile, will find Sally still behind bars for the festivities, while a character death is reportedly being lined up to bring in the New Year, while there are rumours that Liz McDonald is to be the victim of a hit and run.

Merry Christmas!
