Deadpool 2 is on its way, and the big question on everyone's lips is who will play X-Men character Cable for his on-screen debut.

Wade Wilson's co-creator Rob Liefeld is aiming high for the role, identifying Russell Crowe as his dream choice.

But you'd better be careful on Twitter, you never know who might be listening. And Crowe apparently didn't think an actor of his stature should have to read for any role.

Having seemingly accepted Liefeld's hasty apology, Crowe copied Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds into the conversation, saying that he's sure Reynolds could make it happen if he wanted.

Obviously this is far from a confirmation of intent or even interest in the role, but at least we now know it's on Crowe's radar. He would do a better job than Pierce Brosnan, too.

Should Crowe take on the role, it wouldn't be his first comic book movie, having played Superman's biological father Jor-El in Man of Steel.

Cable is a time-travelling mutant who grew up in the future but is actually Cyclops's son with a clone of Jean Grey. It's complicated, but Deadpool 2 is likely to skip his crazy backstory, anyway.

He is also known as a kind of straight man to Deadpool's tomfoolery.

Crowe will next be seen in Universal's The Mummy reboot as Dr Jekyll – a film intended to kick off another shared cinematic universe like 20th Century Fox's X-Men films.

Deadpool 2 is expected to film this year for release in 2018.
