Crashes within minutes leave two dead on tragic day for Cornwall

It was a another day of tragedies on Cornwall's road after two people died in separate crashes almost at the same exact time. In one incident between Ladock and Probus yesterday (Monday May 20) at 11.47am, a 57-year-old local biker was killed following a collision with a car.

Two minutes earlier and about 18 miles away an elderly man also died after a two-crash in Falmouth. Emergency services were called to Bickland Water Road at around 11.45am with Devon and Cornwall Police saying the crash involved a grey Toyota Yaris and a silver BMW 520D.

The driver of the Toyota, a man aged in his 80s from the Falmouth area, was treated by paramedics at the scene but later died in hospital. In both cases the roads were closed for several hours while emergency services attended and crash scene investigators examined the sites of the incidents.

The two collisions come as already three people have died on Cornwall's roads this months and many other road users have received injuries in crashes on the A30, A390 and A38. The three who have died include a five-year-old boy, a 38-year-old man and another man in his 50s.

Three others were in hospital in serious or critical condition with at least one left fighting for their life. Several more were treated in hospital as a result of four collisions in the space of a week.

Beginning a tragic week of accidents on Cornwall's roads was the death of a little boy, aged five, on a stretch of the A390 near St Austell. Police, ambulance crews and an air ambulance all attended the scene after reports a pedestrian was hit by a car on Thursday, April 25, at around 4.50pm.

Days later a man in his 50s died at the scene of a crash on the A38 Glynn Valley and a woman was rushed to hospital in critical condition. Emergency services, including the air ambulance, attended the scene between Bodmin Parkway Train Station and The Halfway House on Sunday, April 28.

Devon and Cornwall Police said the crash, which occurred at around 12.30pm, involved two vehicles and three people were rushed to Treliske Hospital to be treated for their injuries. Meanwhile, one person died at the scene and another was taken to Derriford Hospital and is in a critical condition.

Two pedestrians suffered serious injuries after being hit by a grey BMW 1 series in St Ives two days later. Police have since said that one of them died following the crash on Trelyon Avenue on Tuesday, April 30 at 7.45pm. The driver of the car, a 45-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by driving without due care and attention.

A man also lost his life following a two-car crash on the A30 near Launceston at around 10.25pm on Thursday May 2. Emergency services, including the air ambulance, rushed to the scene of the collision in Plusha, near to Bodmin Moor Services, where two cars were involved - a Range Rover Evoque and a Honda Civic. Sadly, a 38-year-old man, who was travelling in the Honda died at the scene.
