The Crown set pictures accurately recreate Charles and Camilla's complicated beginning

From Digital Spy

With The Crown's third season just days away from hitting Netflix, our excitement is hitting fever-pitch.

So, to tide us over, we've been taking another look at the new cast and how they live up to their real-life royal counterparts – and considering the attention to detail Netflix has put into the early days of Prince Charles (Josh O'Connor) and Camilla Parker Bowles' (Emerald Fennell) relationship, we can't wait to see the rest of the series.

In pictures taken on the set of season 3 last year, it was revealed that The Crown was planning to recreate the moment Charles was spotted with Camilla Shand at a polo match in the '70s.

And when you compare the set photo to a real photo of the future royal couple also meeting up at a polo match, it's clear the series was determined to make this moment as accurate as possible.

Of course, Prince Charles and Camilla's relationship marks the beginning of a complicated story that would play out over decades.

Although Charles fell in love with Camilla on meeting her and the couple began dating, their relationship was put on hold when Charles returned to the Navy in 1973, and Camilla married Andrew Parker Bowles soon afterwards.

Charles himself then married Princess Diana in 1981 – a story set to play out in The Crown's fourth season – but Charles and Camilla began an affair, and divorced their respective partners in 1995 (Camilla) and 1996 (Charles).

The Crown will also see the love story get more complicated in its early days, as it will explore Charles' sister Princess Anne enjoying a fling with Camilla's future husband Andrew Parker Bowles too (via The Sun).

Speaking about the relationship between Charles and Camilla, creator Peter Morgan shared that he's hoping to change the public's perception of the couple.

"People always assume Charles cheated on Diana with Camilla," Morgan said. "It’s absolutely the wrong way round. He was deeply in love with Camilla and forced to marry Diana."

Meanwhile, alongside Josh O'Connor and Emerald Fennell as new additions to the cast, the third series of the hit Netflix show will include the likes of Tobias Menzies, Helena Bonham Carter and, of course, Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II.

The Crown returns on Sunday (November 17) on Netflix.
