Daryl Hannah Held Over Pipeline Protest

Daryl Hannah has been arrested in Texas after blocking construction workers attempting to clear ground to make way for a controversial oil pipeline.

The Splash and Blade Runner star was protesting outside Winnsboro, about 80 miles (130 km) east of Dallas, according to her agent, Paul Bassis.

The owner of a property on the site, Eleanor Fairchild, 78, whose land was subject to compulsory purchase for the project was also arrested.

"Ms Hannah and Ms Fairchild were defending Ms Fairchild's property from eminent domain abuse by TransCanada ," he said.

Wood County Sheriff's Office said Hannah had been held on charges of trespassing and resisting arrest.

The Keystone XL pipeline would ship more than 500,000 barrels a day of oil sands-derived crude to the Texas Gulf Coast from Canada.

The southern section of the pipeline - which Hannah was protesting against - is being built after being approved by President Barack Obama.

However, the northern section of the £4.7bn (\$7.6bn) project, which would take crude across the Canadian border into the US, was rejected by Mr Obama last year because of environmental and water supply concerns on its route through Nebraska.

TransCanada has reapplied to the State Department for approval of the full project. The State Department has jurisdiction because the line would cross a border.

Hannah was previously arrested outside the White House during another protest against the pipeline.
