People across Surrey can finally crack open idle bottles of sunscreen, don their favourite shorts or summer dresses, and relax outside with an ice-cold drink as the county lines up for a late-June heatwave. Sunny weather will join rising temperatures in the coming days with highs set to reach 27C and be hotter than Barcelona, according to forecasters at the Met Office and BBC.

Dorking, Staines, and Woking are expected to sweat in 27C heat as temperatures peak on Tuesday (June 25), while Farnham, Guildford, Horley, and Redhill will follow closely behind as the mercury reaches 26C. A gentle breeze is expected throughout the weekend and next week and will complement the arrival of the long-awaited British summer.

Sunny spells are forecast across the weekend and much of the following week, before temperatures tail off along with the return of cloud and some drizzle. The Met Office has marked London and much of Surrey in orange on a map where maximum temperatures could reach 28C to 29C.

The area surrounding this is yellow and suggests extended very warm weather and typical summer heat for two to three days. Chief forecaster at the Met Office, Neil Armstrong, said: “After a brief, less settled, interlude on Friday and Saturday, fine conditions will return by Sunday and into next week.”

He predicted: “For much of the UK, this will be accompanied by a boost in temperatures with many places reaching the mid-20Cs by the middle of next week.” Mr Armstrong continued: “Some central and southern areas are likely to see temperatures approaching the values needed for heatwave conditions.

“Heatwave conditions need to remain in situ for three consecutive days, and by the middle of next week it is possible that some parts of the UK could be reaching heatwave thresholds. However, whether or not everyone experiences heatwave thresholds, the majority of the UK will experience the finest conditions and highest temperatures so far this year.”

Advice to stay safe near water in a heatwave

National water safety partner at the RNLI, Samantha Hughes, said: “The forecasted warm weather will mean we’ll see more visitors at the coast and we always want people to enjoy themselves safely.” She advised people should enter the water slowly to lower the risk of cold water shock and recommended people visit lifeguarded areas.

People who get into trouble in the water should ‘Float to Live’. The RNLI said this means tilting your head back with your ears submerged and Ms Hughes advised: “Try to relax and control your breathing.

“Use your hands to help you stay afloat and then call for help or swim to safety if you can. In an emergency at the coast, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard or ask for the fire service if you are near inland waters.”
