The deaths of two prisoners at HMP Barlinnie and HMP Shotts are to be probed.

William Devine died on April 7 while in custody of HMP Barlinnie, which has seen a spate of deaths in recent months. The cause of death is currently unclear, however, it makes the third prisoner to have died at the Glasgow prison this year.

Mr Devine's family have stated that he passed while in hospital.

The death of Iain Brown, 48, at HMP Shotts on April 8 will also be investigated. His cause of death is also currently unclear.

In February, we reported how David Crawford had died in Barlinnie after being sentenced 20 years ago at the High Court in Edinburgh in 2004. The 59-year-old died on February 2.

Then in March, we reported that a thug who was jailed after repeatedly striking a man with a metal weapon had died in the same prison.

Christopher Masson, 39, was put behind bars after leaving a man covered in blood following an assault in Glasgow's Kinning Park on June 15, 2022. He plead guilty at trial in October of that year of assaulting the man.

All prison deaths are subject to a fatal accident inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
