Two Democrat congressmen have commenced impeachment proceedings against Donald Trump.

Texas Representative Al Green and California Representative Brad Sherman accuse the President of obstructing justice by firing former FBI director James Comey.

Mr Comey was sacked from his job by Mr Trump last month, amid claims that the President was worried about an FBI investigation into his allies’ alleged links to Russia during the 2016 election.

Mr Green told a press conference: “The question really is not whether the President has obstructed justice. The question really is whether the President can obstruct justice with impunity. The question is whether the House of Representatives will allow an obstruction of justice with impunity.”

He added: “We live in a country where no congressmen, no senator, and not even the President of the United States of America is above the law.

“This is all about maintaining a society wherein all persons are created equal and treated equally. And I’ve concluded that as a result articles of impeachment should be drawn.”

Mr Green concluded: “I have engaged in the process of drafting articles of impeachment. My articles of impeachment are being reviewed and at some point, if no one else does, I will file articles of impeachment to impeach President Donald J Trump.”

The chances of successfully impeaching the President and removing him from office appear quite slim, however.

Mr Trump’s Republican Party currently control the House of Representatives and the Senate and members are unlikely to vote in favour of ousting their leader.

But the move by the two Democrats is well-timed for maximum presidential embarrassment: Mr Comey is scheduled to testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee later this week.
