Depp apologises for Donald Trump assassination joke
Johnny Depp has publicly apologised for making a Donald Trump assassination joke on stage at the Glastonbury Festival.
The Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2 star has been formally condemned by the White House for controversial comments he made while introducing a curated selection of films at Glastonbury last night.
"Can you bring Trump here?" he asked, and then responded to the jeering crowd by wondering: "You misunderstand completely. When was the last time an actor assassinated a president?
"I want to clarify, I'm not an actor. I lie for a living [but] it's been a while. Maybe it's about time."
As video of his remarks went viral, the White House referred to the rant as "sad" and the US Secret Service also acknowledged that it "is aware of the comments in question".
Now, Johnny has issued a formal apology to People for causing an offence with what was intended to be an off-the-cuff joke.
"I apologize for the bad joke I attempted last night in poor taste about President Trump," the actor said. "It did not come out as intended, and I intended no malice. I was only trying to amuse, not to harm anyone
His apology came shortly after joining country music legend Kris Kristofferson on the Pyramid Stage for a mid-afternoon performance as Glastonbury got under way. Other celebrities spotted at the festival on Friday included Bradley Cooper and Brad Pitt .
