Dermot O'Leary displayed some very painful-looking cuts and scratches on his hands during an appearance on Good Morning Britain today.

Presenters Ranvir Singh and Richard Madeley asked the X Factor hostto give the cameras a close-up of the marks, after catching sight of them as they were chatting. But fortunately, Dermot reassured viewers it was nothing to worry about.

The perpetrator behind the sore-looking marks was in fact Dermot's cat Toto, who clearly has very quick reflexes.

"She's been blind from birth but has incredible instincts – as you can see," he joked, while holding his hands up for the cameras.

Dermot can't be too annoyed with Toto, however, as she's the inspiration behind his new children's book, Toto the Ninja Cat and the Great Snake Escape.

"I've turned her into an Italian ninja," he laughed while looking at his hands. "I didn't write this with an age group in mind but when I got the deal with my publishers, they said it was going to be marketed roughly to 7- to 8-year-olds."

Dermot went on to reveal that he is no stranger to creative writing, as he used to pen stories when he was just a boy.

"I used to peddle detective fiction when I was about 8 years old around our estate," he added.

"I used to write two pages of detective fiction. I sort of lost the plot towards the end and would go 'And then he solved the crime!'"

Hopefully, his storytelling has come a long way since then...

During his time on the show, Dermot of course spoke a little aboutX Factor and the wildcards, who will be unveiled next weekend.

Viewers have until 1pm today (Monday, October 23) to vote for one of the three acts that were sent home in each category at Judges' Houses.

"We have four categories and four wildcards," the presenter continued. "It's up to the public who goes through."

Although viewers have only just been told about this year's wildcards, the contestants have apparently known for some time.

Dermot added: "They were told just after Judges' Houses. I didn't tell them, the producers did. I think someone sat down with them all and explained what would happen."

Good Morning Britain airs on weekdays from 6am on ITV. The X Factor next airs this Saturday (October 28) at 8.20pm and Sunday (October 29) at 7pm, also on ITV.
