Those lovable Minions are back in cinemas this week as Despicable Me 3 is released, and we should expect more of the same.

The first reviews for the animated threequel have landed, with the majority giving it three stars and positive – if not glowing – reviews, with Universal safe in the knowledge that it'll make a lot of money.

Despicable Me 3 sees Gru (voiced by Steve Carell) discover he has a long-lost twin brother, as well as tackling his most formidable nemesis to date, '80s-obsessed villain Balthazar Bratt, voiced by South Park's Trey Parker.

Empire

"The third Despicable Me film chronologically is also the third-best in terms of quality. But it has just enough energy and flashes of inspiration to suggest it's a franchise that could run and run."

Daily Telegraph

"It's consistently funny, with the kind of well-orchestrated slapstick moments where you can actually feel the stick slap."

The Guardian

"Despicable Me 3 will certainly keep the younger elements of its audience happy, with its dose of aspartame-rush hyperactivity. But for everyone else it may prove decent rather than captivating."

Variety

"Yes, Despicable Me 3 is unwieldy, but it mostly works, as co-directors Pierre Coffin (who also voices the Minions) and Kyle Balda never lose sight of the film's emotional centre, packing the rest with as much humour as they can manage."

The Hollywood Reporter

"Despicable Me 3 offers up more of the same: more Gru – actually Gru times two if you count his twin brother, Dru; more Minions; more Looney Tunes-esque sight gags; more pop-culture references, with an emphasis on the 1980s this time; and more catchy Pharrell Williams songs on the soundtrack."

Despicable Me 3 is released in cinemas on June 30.
