Destiny 2’s best expansions are free to play on PlayStation, Xbox and PC

Bungie has unlocked the best of Destiny 2’s expansions for all players ahead of the release of the upcoming The Final Shape DLC.

For a limited period, Destiny 2 fans on PC, PlayStation and Xbox can check out The Witch Queen, Beyond Light, and Shadowkeep without paying a penny. This period ends on June 3, the day before The Final Shape expansion arrives.

The message is clear: if you have moved away from Destiny 2 or have never played it, now's a pretty good time to jump in.

If you are a PlayStation Plus member, you can also claim the most recent expansion, Lightfall, as part of May’s Monthly Games selection.

All we’re missing is Destiny 2’s oldest major expansion, Forsaken from 2018. While it’s regarded as the DLC that turned the game around, saving it from being seen as a disappointing follow-up to the original, The Witch Queen is perhaps otherwise Destiny 2’s most satisfying campaign expansion to date.

Lots of earlier content has also been “vaulted”, to use the term bandied about online, meaning it effectively no longer exists in Destiny 2’s live service universe.

This free season is called Open Expansion Access. It turns the relatively small free-to-play part of Destiny 2 and opens it up to let you experience closer to what the real Destiny 2 mega-fans have access to.

It's equivalent to the Destiny 2 Legacy Collection, which currently costs £9.99 on the PlayStation Store and Xbox Store, but usually costs £49.99, and is that much on Steam right now.

In the upcoming The Final Shape expansion all this apparent generosity is designed to support you hunt down series baddie the Witness in the final confrontation of the Light and Darkness saga.

However, Destiny 2 isn’t going away after that, much as the end of the Thanos saga didn’t spell the end of the Marvel movies.

Sony acquired Destiny (and Halo) creator Bungie in 2022 as part of a £2.88 billion deal. This Destiny 2 expansion’s success could determine not only the future of the game, but of Bungie itself too. In late 2023, we heard Bungie is at risk of being subsumed into Sony if it does not meet its financial goals.
